Nr. 1 among Lithuanian museums, visitor centres, manors, castles and other objects for visiting, 2021 („Lithuania Travel” has initiated the Study, The Study has been carried out by BERENT)

The Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery was founded in 1990. It is within the jurisdiction of the local government of Panevėžys, and its founder is the Panevėžys City Council.

The Gallery has 3 departments: Art Gallery, Ceramic Art Pavilion and Photography Gallery. The main directions of activities are exhibitions, enlargement of its art collection, education, and art publications.

Solo, group and conceptual exhibitions, representing various genres of art, are arranged every year, combining the representation of the artists from Panevėžys, the Aukštaitija region, Lithuania and foreign countries. The goal of the gallery is not only to present the collections formed by it, but also to initiate new projects and take part in joint art projects together with local and foreign partners.

In 2010 a new division of the Gallery – the Photography Gallery – was established, and it is engaged in promotion of photography art, creative, educational and publishing activities. The Gallery is closely co-operating with the Panevėžys -based photography artists and organizing Panevėžys International Photography Biennial „Man and the City”.

In 2015 the extension of the Gallery – the Ceramic Art Pavilion dedicated to the works generated during Panevėžys International Ceramic Symposiums – was opened. The modern building designed by architect Valdas Klimavičius became the oasis of the ceramic art works generated during the Panevėžys International Ceramic Symposiums.  The newly installed interactive terminal provides access to the information about 178 professional ceramic artists from 37 countries and who created the pieces deployed in the Ceramic Art Pavilion. You are very welcome to see the unique and only ceramic art collection-of-the-type in Lithuania and the Baltic States reflecting not only national, but also global trends in contemporary ceramic art, and promoting cognition of the surrounding world as seen by professional ceramic artists.

The educational activities of the gallery include work with spectators during the exhibitions, lectures and discussions conducted on the themes of cultural retrospection, art history and international theoretical conferences on topics dictated by the urgent problems of art world. The gallery also organizes chamber music concerts. The gallery compiles catalogues, booklets, posters and informational publications.

In collaborating with AB “Panevėžio Stiklas” (Panevėžys Glass Factory), and from 2006 with the ceramics company UAB „Midenė“ the gallery organizes international ceramic symposiums , which are known not only in Lithuania but also worldwide. Besides the unique collection, which is replenished with new pieces every year, the gallery has collected over 3000 books, publications and visual material on the ceramics of the world. Besides, during the symposiums the international theoretical conferences are held with participation of the symposium-attending artists and invited art writers, so valuable theoretical summing-up is made. Ceramics conscious people from various cities of Lithuania come to the conferences as well as to the concluding exhibition at the gallery to see all the works generated during the symposium.

In 2017 the gallery became a member of International Academy of Ceramics (IAC).

In 2021 Panevėžys Art Gallery has been awarded the first place in the category of museums, manors, castles and other visited objects in the study on the assessment of the attractiveness of Lithuanian tourist sites initiated by the National Tourism Development Agency LITHUANIA TRAVEL.
